素描是进入绘画大门的第一步。素描也可以称之为造型艺术。是用一种颜色或几种颜色，把所描绘的客观对象，高度概括成黑白灰，主要还是指单色。利用科学的透视、黑白灰色调规律，通过素描造型手段，把线条或光影色调组织起来，在一张白纸上塑造一个假设的空间画面。练习素描，就是要把所画物体，从生活中提炼出来，除去客观物象的完整性、独特性等，使它服从于绘画秩序，转变成绘画语言，最终变成画面造型的一部分。素描是美术特长生考学前，所要练习的基本功。素描也是高考美院所要必考的科目。开始练习时，要强调对形体结构的理解，明暗之间的关系，线与面所表达的空间透视变化，以及对虚实、明暗、强弱变化的把握。熟练以后，就可以利用轮廓结构、线面穿插、调子节奏、虚实透视、工具选用等，更深一层的研究用素描这种绘画语言，表现描绘对象的精神内涵了。素描是视觉空间、客观空间、画面空间的完美结合。
